Segway Ninebot Owner's Guide: How to Set Up, Lock, Unbind and Fix a Forgotten Password

Short answer: your Ninebot is managed through the Segway-Ninebot app. To unbind, open the scooter in the app, scroll to More options and choose Unbind. If you bought a used scooter that's still bound to the previous owner, ask them to unbind it, or contact Segway support with your proof of purchase. For a forgotten app password, use the app's password reset. Locked out of the scooter itself? Contact Segway support or the retailer with proof of purchase — avoid third-party "unlock" tools, which can void your warranty.

App menus change with updates. If a step doesn't match your app, check Segway-Ninebot's official support.

1. Set up your Ninebot in the app

  1. Download the Segway-Ninebot app (iOS or Android). The QR code is in your user manual.
  2. Turn the scooter on with the power button.
  3. Turn on Bluetooth on your phone.
  4. Follow the in-app steps to pair (bind) the scooter to your account.

New scooters often need to be activated in the app before they'll ride at full speed, so do this before your first ride.

2. What does "binding" mean?

Binding links the scooter to your Segway account. It lets you name the scooter, see ride stats, update firmware and change settings. A scooter that isn't bound to you will usually still ride, but you'll see a "non-owner connection" message and won't be able to change some settings.

3. How to unbind a Ninebot (before you sell it)

  1. Connect to the scooter in the Segway-Ninebot app.
  2. Scroll to the bottom and tap More options.
  3. Tap Unbind and follow the prompts.

Always unbind before selling or giving away your scooter, so the next owner can set it up.

4. Bought a used Ninebot that's still bound?

  • Ask the seller to unbind it from their app — it only takes a minute.
  • If you can't reach them, contact Segway-Ninebot support. They can usually help if you bought through a recognised channel and have proof of payment.
  • Be wary of buying a second-hand scooter the seller can't unbind — it may not be theirs to sell.

5. Using the scooter lock

Many Ninebot models have an app lock that stops the motor and can sound an alarm if the scooter is moved. It deters casual tampering but won't stop a thief from carrying the scooter away. Pair it with a physical lock when you leave your scooter in public.

6. Forgot your password?

  • App account password: use the "forgot password" option on the app's sign-in screen to reset it by email or phone.
  • Locked scooter and no access to the owner's account: contact Segway-Ninebot support or the store you bought it from, with your proof of purchase.
  • Physical combination lock: some locks have a reset procedure in their manual. If you've lost the code and the manual, contact the lock's manufacturer.

Avoid firmware hacks or third-party tools that claim to bypass binding or locks. They can damage the scooter's controller and usually void the warranty.

7. Ride legally

Ninebot F-series and MAX scooters top out at 25km/h, which meets the limit in states that allow private e-scooters. In Queensland you now also need a learner licence. See our state-by-state laws guide.
